Chinese Sculpture at Innisfree, 1998

Catlike, she crouches on haunches & stares back at me,
a little lake where her tongue should be.
From here I cannot see the little man she holds,
nor the horns or wild hair or tail.
From here, the bulbous eyes stare back, still,
between a threat and resolution
to take off through the woods, little man in her mouth.
