The Narrowing

The trees have their strings of sprigs
the last stragglers dying on branches
a brown sun
sumped between skeletal shelves of trees
the leaves sheltering on the ground
in wet heaps, the air soundless
Burning yard debris
Winter is this cold snap
the marching cold foot soldier
of one’s own destined soon to come, death.
