Some furrow-faced, some
With mustaches exactly like horse-tails.
They look like stuffed dolls in costumes,
With red-painted cheeks and fiery ears.

I know one as he
Smells of horses, whose ornaments
Hang like a shop’s spiced meats.
I know his blunt fingers, little black hooves
Dragging twilight into dawn.

Yet the bulging bodies beneath
Are unmistakably
All in a row of black and red.
Long cloaks trace
Figure-eights along the ground.
And their feet are hammers.
Their chests are barrels of gunpowder.
Their swords curve up, long and hard,
In the most wicked silver desire.

In their faces I can hear
The sound of blood.
